Pests and Diseases are less common to indoor plants than gardens. Most pests are introduced by other plants and Diseases normally come from poor care or bad growing conditions. Both require a quick reaction. Pests- Insects are the most serious problem for plants in the home. In a home environment, they can quickly get out of control. It is a good idea to check your plants on a regular basis. The five most common invaders are aphids, mealy-bugs, scale, spider mites, and whiteflies. You should have a good quality insecticide on hand and follow the directions on the bottle. Diseases- Plant diseases are caused by three factors- a susceptible host plant, the pathogen and an environment conducive to disease development. Diseases are caused by organisms, fungi, bacteria and viruses. To control disease keep foliage dry, remove infected tissue, disinfect tools and hands and always use clean potting media. |
